What Does it Take to Succeed in Life?
Just ask Mike Elias.
For local businessman and sports enthusiast Mike Elias, a friendly game of backyard football is a full-blown event. As he whispers a complex play to his smiling teammates in the huddlechalk-full of patterns, decoys and other trickeryit’s clear that Mike takes play-calling and strategy to the nth degree. After all, his family and friends commonly joke that he has a larger playbook than the Washington Redskins. It may just be pick-up ball, but everyone appreciates the enthusiasm he exhibits in the huddle and on the playing field. That’s just Mike. Whatever he’s passionate about, he takes an analytical approach and truly goes the whole nine-yards to make the most out of any situation.
The Art of Planning
It’s obvious to anyone who knows Mike that forming a solid game plan is central to how he approaches everything in life. Even his hobbies involve a high degree of strategy. On his rare days off, if Mike’s not enjoying a friendly round of golf, chances are you’ll find him playing beach volleyball, hiking or distance running. Mike has even tested his mettle by training for and running in two marathons, thriving on the process of achieving this rigorous goal. Also, during his college years, he excelled in the Ranger Challenge, the varsity sport of the Army ROTC. This grueling competition is an extreme physical fitness test and team-building sport, and Mike was the leader of a squad that won the annual event twice. And for him, like in a lot of things, the decisive factor was strategy. “We competed to win, but it was also important to enjoy our planning, training and teamwork” he explains.
